Master P said ugh a lot. T.I. says he’s king of the south. all of these things have been proven when it comes to branding yourself in music.
Another thing to think about is logos, business cards, shirts and any of the products you sell. They all need to have your band name and your website on them. One of the most uncommon ways is to have videos or DVD s that you sell. This is costly but it’s proven to work because people keep videos and watch them over again. One of the most effective and very inexpensive ways to brand yourself is Google’s pay per click. You can have your logo and face plastered across thousands of websites and you won’t pay unless you get a click. It’s a great way to get your face out there. Honestly you may not get a ton of clicks but you will get a ton of exposure. Once people get used to seeing you, you’ll be destined to win.
A great way of branding yourself in music for me is the social networks of course. There’s so many to choose from, my space, twitter, face book, black voices, black planet, you tube and so on. Register with these sites and be determined to gain friends and tell them about your music. Create an audience. Don’t worry if you don’t get lots of followers the first week or so. Just write about things that interest you and the people will follow. Write articles for sites like EzineArticles.com and become an expert in your field. If you’re writing articles, stick to a main subject. That way you’ll be branding your name with that subject. Whatever your strength is stick to it.
Perhaps the best way to brand yourself is to do shows or speeches to help others. One mistake I see a ton of artist doing is not saying they’re name enough at shows. You need to say your name at your show a few times. At least three times, once at the beginning, the middle and at the end. The announcer may say it twice but there is nothing like it coming from your own mouth. (Plus that’s five times total the audience have heard you name.) Video tape these shows or speeches and post them on you tube. This will definitely put your face out there to more than just your home town. I’ve used people’s videos from you tube and posted them on my site to over 18,000 people. You never know, one person could get you tons of exposure.
Be determined to brand yourself in music and be courageous. One day you will reap the benefits.

Fast-forward from the tribes of Africa to the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica in the late sixties. The impoverished of Kingston gathered together in groups to form DJ conglomerates. At the time, the DJ’s comments weren’t as important as the quality of the sound system and its ability to get the crowd moving. Kool Herc grew up in this community before he moved to the Bronx.
During the late sixties, reggae wasn’t popular with New Yorkers. As a DJ, Kool Herc spun rhythm and blues records to please his party crowd. But, he had to add his personal touch. During the breaks, Herc began to speak to his audience as he had learned to do in Jamaica. He called out, the audience responded, and then he pumped the volume back up on the record. This call and response technique was nothing new to this community who’d been reared in Baptist and Methodist churches where call and response was a technique used by the speakers to get the congregation involved. Historians compare it to the call and response performed by Jazz musicians and was very much a part of the culture of Jazz music during the renaissance in Harlem.
Herc’s DJ style caught on. His party’s grew in popularity. He began to buy multiple copies of the same albums. When he performed his duties as a DJ, he extended the breaks by using multiple copies of the same records. He chatted, as it is called in dance hall, with his audience for longer and longer periods.
Others copied Herc’s style. Soon a friendly battle ensued between New York DJs. They all learned the technique of using break beats. Herc stepped up the game by giving shout-outs to people who were in attendance at the parties and coming up with his signature call and response. Other DJs responded by rhyming with their words when they spoke to the audience. More and more DJs used two and four line rhymes and anecdotes to get their audiences involved and hyped at these parties.
One day, Herc passed the microphone over to two of his friends. He took care of the turn table and allowed his buddies to keep the crowd hyped with chants, rhymes and anecdotes while he extended the breaks of different songs indefinitely. This was the birth of rap as we know it.
Hip-hop has evolved from the days of the basement showdowns to big business in the music industry. In the seventies and eighties, the pioneers and innovators of the rap record was the DJ. He was the guy who used his turntable to create fresh sounds with old records. Then, he became the guy who mixed these familiar breaks with synthesizers to produce completely new beats. Not much has changed in that aspect of hip-hop. The guy who creates the beat is still the heart of the track. Now, we call him the producer. Even though some DJs work as producers as well as DJs (quite a few start out as DJs before they become producers), today’s title “DJ” doesn’t carry the same connotative meaning it did in the eighties. Today’s hip-hop producer performs the same tasks as the eighty’s DJ.

Submitting Hip Hop Beats And Songs To Record Labels – 6 Tips For Success

If you send hip hop and rap beats to any record label or music company without first getting permission from them, they are considered unsolicited materials. Most major and upper independent record labels will reject (trash) them. Part of the reason they do this is to protect themselves from lawsuits. The last thing they want is someone saying that their music was stolen, when the label had “no idea” that they received anything from you. Another reason is that they work hand in hand with credible music industry managers, A&Rs, record producers, lawyers etc… to filter through the junk music. If you really want to get into the music business this way, I recommend you hook up with one of these type kats to walk your beats through the door and into the right guy’s hand (remember it’s a people’s game).
2. Find out the guidelines for submission and follow them to a tee
If they ask for only 3 tracks, send only three tracks. There is nothing more irritating than someone who can’t follow instruction. If they give no limit, only send 5 to 7 of your hottest tracks. If they want more, believe me, they will call you.
3. Put your hottest tracks firstLike the saying goes… “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”. You have about 30 second to catch the ear of the listener.
4. Know the Addresse (the person, company, or the like to whom a piece of mail is addressed)
When you send in your beat CD, make sure you know who’s attention to address the materials to. Otherwise you submission could just end up in the trash.
5. Don’t expect to get your material back. (even with a S.A.S.E.)
6. Be patient
Most of the time, the artist will record to the track and let you know afterwards if they decide to use it for their album. If they don’t use it then you probably won’t here back unless you follow up. Also, if directly solicited, set an “on hold status” typically from 3 to 6 months. This allows you to shop your tracks elsewhere if they don’t get picked up soon enough for you. Silly, but I’ve seen labels hold or buy a track just so another label or artist can’t get it. Either way, try not to have your beats tied up for too long in one place. After all, you made them right…?
